Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra return to Fairfield Halls to perform two of the best loved works in the orchestral repertoire.
Elgar was deeply affected by the First World War, and like many of his fellow artists, came to realise that the world that had inspired so much of his work was gone forever. His ‘Cello Concerto’, composed in 1919 is a haunting elegy to this world, and a lost generation.
Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony’ is a portrayal of an impassioned struggle against fate, taking listeners on an emotional journey via moments of doubt and despair, fragility and sublime romance before reaching its triumphant conclusion. It remains one of the most performed symphonies of all time.
SYO is delighted to welcome back Daniel Brandon as soloist in the concerto. Daniel was principal cellist for both SYO and the National Youth Orchestra in 2018/19, and now studies in Germany.
Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra is one of the UK’s leading youth orchestras, with over 160 players aged 8 – 18 drawn from all over south west London and Surrey. Founded in 1944, it is based in Wimbledon and gives 3 concerts a year in and around London. The Main Orchestra will be taking this programme on a tour of the Czech Republic in July.
