Join us for a course of mindful nature-based drawing activities designed to boost artistic confidence and improve wellbeing.
Mindfulness is the ability to be present and fully engaged with whatever you are doing in the moment. Drawing is an activity well-suited to mindfulness, relaxing your mind and focusing your attention.
With a focus on the natural world, this course will include observational drawing, mark-making, pattern, texture, colour and mood, drawing games and more. All of these exercises are valuable not only for achieving mindfulness, but also for practising essential drawing skills.
The course will be situated in the Cicely Room at The Lodge, amid the quiet and beautiful surroundings of Sutton Ecology Centre. Weather permitting, our sessions will involve short walks into the centre and drawing outdoors.
We’ll be working in pencil, charcoal, ink, brushes and gathered natural materials. We only request that participants bring a selection of pencils and a sketchbook to record their journey through the course.
The course is led by Zoe Scammell, with support from husband and fellow artist Mark Pembrey. Zoe is an artist and illustrator who has previously taught mindfulness courses both in person and online. She has given workshops at various venues across London including The National Portrait Gallery, The Saatchi Gallery and the Wallace Collection. Zoe’s approach to mindfulness is often playful. As well as moments of calm and contemplation, this course will have many moments of humour and joy.
Course aims:
- Enjoy drawing in a relaxing and fun environment
- Try out drawing games which will help you find a more playful approach to your artwork
- Use simple techniques to help you practice mindfulness in your drawing
- Learn tactics to help you quiet your inner critic and start enjoying the drawing process
- Learn some fundamental skills to help you draw more confidently
